Knowledge is the key to avoiding lawsuit following an automobile accident

Even the most skilled drivers are subject to automobile accidents. Knowing what to do immediately after an accident can not only save a life but minimize and often avoid legal problems.

First, always stop your car. No matter how slight the collision, failing to stop may subject you to criminal prosecution. Second, if there are injuries, call 911 to request assistance. If the accident occurs within city limits, call the municipal police; if it occurs on the open highway, call the State Police or County Sheriff's office.

If you hit an unattended vehicle, the law requires you to notify the owner, or leave a written message with your name and contact information.

You are also entitled to receive the same information from other persons involved in the accident. Get names and contact information of any witnesses to the accident, make notes of the important aspects of the collision, and diagram the exact position of the vehicles before and after the accident.
