Victims of identity theft have recourse

Identity theft is a crime in which someone takes information such as Social Security and driver's license numbers and uses it for his or her own personal gain. Nationally, an estimated 7 million consumers become victims of identity theft each year.

It can strike even if you have been careful about protecting your personal information. If you suspect that someone has stolen your personal information and is using it to commit fraud or theft, there are three basic steps you should take:
